Jabal-e-Soor The Holy Ziyarat of Makkah

Jabal-e-Soor The Holy Ziyarat of Makkah

Jabal-e-Soor is at Mount at the foot of the city of the Makah. It is visited by pilgrims during Hajj and Umrah as this mountain has a huge religious meaning. It houses the cave in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr (R.A) sought refuge for three days and nights from the Quraish, as they left Makkah and emigrated to Madinah. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr (R.A) reached at the cave on Mount Soor, AbuBakr (R.A) entered first to clear away anything that might damage the Prophet (peace be upon him). He marked a few holes and stuffed them with pieces of fabric. The Prophet (peace be upon him) then entered and went to sleep on Abu Bakr’s (R.A) lap.

Unexpectedly, something stung Abu Bakr’s (R.A) foot, but he did not move, fearing he would wake the Prophet (peace be upon him). The pain was so powerful that tears began to run down his cheeks and into the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) face. The Prophet (peace be upon him) woke up and saw that Abu Bakr (R.A) was in pain. He applied his spit on the injury and the pain moved out. For three alternate nights the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr (R.A) remained hidden in the cave.

During this period, Abu Bakr’s (R.A) son, Abdullah, would pass his nights close to. The young man would return to Makkah very early in the morning so that the Quraish had no thought that he had slept elsewhere. Each day in Makah, he composed information about the actions of the Quraish, and each night went back to Jabl-e-Soor to inform the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his father Abu Bakr (R.A). Abu Bakr’s (R.A) slave, Amir bin Fuhayra (R.A), would graze Abu Bakr’s (R.A) goats near the cave so that both men could drink milk. Early next morning Amir would take the goats back to Makah along the same route that Abu Bakr’s (R.A) son took, to obscure his footprints. When they were inside, Allah Almighty sent a spider spinning a web from a bush across the entrance to the cave.

Allah Almighty also commanded two doves to fly down between the spider and the tree, make a nest and lay eggs. Temporarily the Quraish search party scoured the area south of Makkah where the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr (R.A) were hiding. They came upon the mouth of the cave, and had they looked down while standing at the border of the cave, they would have definitely found the men they were hunting. With the Quraish so close to discovering their hiding place, Abu Bakr (R.A) became anxious about the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) safety. The Prophet (peace be upon him) restores confidence to him, “How can you be anxious about two with whom is a third, particularly when the third one is Allah Almighty?” On considering the spider’s web and dove nest, the Quraish concluded that no one could have entered the cave and left.

Relating this scene the Quran mentions in Surah Tobah: “If you help not your leader, it is no matter: for Allah Almighty did, to be sure help him, when the Unbelievers drove him out: he had no more than one friend; they two were in the cave, and he said to his friend, “Have no dread, for Allah Almighty is with us”: then Allah sent down His peace upon him, and strengthened him with forces which you saw not, and humbled to the lowest point the word of the Unbelievers. But the word of Allah Almighty is glorious to the heights: for Allah Almighty is Exalted in might, sensible.“ After three days when they learnt that the search by the Quraish had petered out they gone from the cave and headed towards Yasrib which is Madinah now.
